Doing Things Differently

August 16, 2012

There’s a particular refrain that I keep encountering at the moment and I thought I’d share it here to see if anyone else is noticing the same thing.

I bumped into a friend a few weeks ago and we were talking about a particular situation I’ve found myself struggling with. In the context of that she told me that that day she’d got up for her morning run and had felt God tell her that she needed to run it differently. She always does a circle, in the same direction, but this morning she felt prompted to start at the end, so to speak, and run it the other way. She found it really hard – her body wanted to run the usual way – but she persevered with it and heard God say to her at the end, ‘if you do the same thing you’ll get the same result’.

That phrase stuck with me and I’ve noticed both that I’ve been using it in a whole variety of different situations and conversations, and also that others are saying the same, almost identical, phrase too.

And then a few days ago I was at New Horizons in Coleraine. The irrepressible Malcom Duncan had given the previous night’s preach and they were talking about it at lunch when I was there. Apparently he talked about Rowan Atkinson’s wonderful moment on the keyboard at the Olympic opening ceremony and said, ‘you can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results: we can’t keep playing the same note and expect things to change’.  Wow, that sounded kinda familiar!

That’s as far as I’ve got for now. I don’t have any particular interpretation to give to this or any hunch as to where this might apply particularly. But I think this is something that God is prompting us to think about and I’d encourage you to give it some reflection and let me know what you think.

Yes definitely Ruth! I’ve been thinking about a variation on this theme which is thay have the power to change youself in any given situation and if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got! It’s inspired me to be active/brave and change a few things!
